Where to stay in Weligama – Hangtime Hostel
Wake up in a boat and enjoy the sun reflecting on the sea form the roof terrace
During my stay in Sri Lanka I stayed first at Hikkaduwa where I enjoyed the most the sea turtle bay (you can read about it here).
Then I moved for one more month in Kabalana, where I taught yoga but struggled a bit with isolation.
I then decided to move to Weligama to enjoy few days of full comfort and surf before heading to the inner parts of Sri Lanka, to visit Ella, Kandy and Sigiriya.
Gianni and I have stayed at Hangtime hostel – famous among Sri Lanka afecionado and travelers for its terrace overlooking the sea.
Surf, Read, Yoga, Repeat – my routine at Hangtime Hostel
Reasons to stay at Hangtime Hostel:
Surfing in Weligama
Your stay includes rental of surf boards and paddle boards – both soft and hard boards!
Just remember to bring a surf suit or a surf tshirt to avoid scratching your chest as I did (ouch).
The waves are perfect for beginners during the low season. I have been there during the month of June and had a blast. If you are more of a pro you might prefer to go during high season.
Fast wifi in Weligama
In addition to yoga, I also work as freelance digital consultant and before getting to Hangtime, I sometimes struggled to find a place with fast wi-fi to do some work and a few Skype calls. The digital nomads out there will understand the struggle. The wi-fi was good enough for me to have some calls, especially the one in the room. I had first conference call from a mattress in a boat.
Healthy and nutritious food
The breakfast is delicious – my absolutely favourite was the porridge. It was also the most filling options among the ones I tried once there, so if you have several hours of surf planned ahead of you, fill up on it!
On the other hand, I feel that the smoothie in a bowl could be a bit more dense so that’s one I would not go for.
In addition, you can get yoga classes and the view is just amazing. Hangtime gave me one of the best sunsets I saw in Sri Lanka.
If you are planning to go to Weligama, check their promo options where most of the perks I listed above are included.
And if you are not sure about low-season have a look at my Instagram as I spent 3 months in Sri Lanka during the so called ‘low season’ and apart from some showers that lasted max. half day, the weather was just perfect!
